Katie Hamel awarded
the 2010 Steve “ICEMAN” Brown Junior Cyclist of the Year Award

Katie Hamel, daughter of Beth and Dennis Hamel, is the recipient of the 2010 Steve “ICEMAN” Brown Junior Cyclist of the year Award, along with a $1,000.00 Scholarship, presented by the Michigan Youth Cycling Scholarship Program. She was also awarded a trophy, which will be on display for the year at her ship sponsor, Village Bike Shop in Grand Rapids, MI.

Katie, who is 13 years old (racing age of 14), is in 8th grade at Sparta Middle School, and says that math is her favorite subject.  When she’s not racing her new Specialized Ruby Elite bike or working on her geometry homework, Katie enjoys reading and playing video games.

Katie is the overall points winner in Michigan Points Challenge sanctioned races for two years running now.  Her favorite race last year was the Tour de Frankenmuth, and when asked why, responded that the course suited her well, and that she likes the downhill finish.

Katie has a lot of plans for the 2011 racing season.  She is particularly looking forward to the Tour de Frankenmuth again, as well as the Terry Reisch Memorial Charity Race, a race to benefit the Hospice Organization.  In order to train for her races, Katie does lots of training rides including those with adults, even though she may get dropped.  She also rides a lot with other kids involved with Michigan Youth Cycling.

When asked how she’ll be a good ambassador for the organization, she said that she helps the newer kids on the team by teaching them the tips and tricks of riding.  She then added that she would like to encourage anyone interested in getting into the sport to join Michigan Youth Cycling, because it’s a great way to make friends and have fun, while still learning to compete in the sport, and it has a very warm, welcoming, family feeling to it.

Future plans may include attending college at Lees McRae as a Business major, and riding for their collegiate cycling team, but for now, she says, “I’m really looking forward to this year’s racing.”
