For 2014, Michigan Youth Cycling has partnered with Tree Fort Bikes of Ypsilanti, MI to present the youth awards at Barry Roubaix. As one of the earliest and largest events on the Michigan cycling calendar, Barry-Roubaix has become an important event for many youth cyclists. The partnership between MYC and Tree Fort has provided the opportunity to help expand the youth category experience at the race.
“Working with Tree Fort Bikes to help expand interest in the youth category is going to help secure growth in youth cycling for many seasons to come. Not only are riders racing for scholarships, but because of our partnership, they’ll have a unique awards experience as well.” ~ Jeff Buerman – MYC President
With the partnership, Tree Fort has provided $1000 in funding for this year’s event with 100% of the funds going directly towards the race awards. In addition to the new youth awards, the race categories will now be subdivided to better serve and represent the youth categories. Barry-Roubaix wants to invest in the 11-18 year old youth’s participation and have decided to reduce their entry fees from $45 to $25 for each of the 24 and 36 mile distances. As a multi-channel retailer, Tree Fort has a strong online presence with a local storefront on the east side of Michigan, bringing further exposure to the event and scholarships available. This additional exposure will bring additional participation but also increase the level of competition in the youth categories.
